FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK
BY BOB ENGLES
Many residents recently became aware of a survey that is being circulated to determine what our community needs to grow and prosper. The survey is intended to provide input from the community on how best to utilize the money that could be generated from a ˝ cent local option sales tax through the guidelines of a statute commonly known as LB840.
The survey is asking for your opinion of 4 listed categories that the money could be used for:
1. Downtown Redevelopment: It is important to note that this category could include the central business district, courthouse square business district, Crestview, or any other business district that could use assistance.
2. Industry Development: One of the most important factors in this category is the retention of current job creators. Sometimes we limit our scope in this area to our major manufacturers, and granted they are critical for our economic well-being, but we also need to keep in mind, NPPD, Peru State College, Auburn Public Schools, Nemaha County Hospital, SENDS, and a host of other employers.
3. Business Development: Start up, expansion, retention, and technical assistance are some of the factors that could be used in this category
4. Tourism: Is tourism important to Auburn? Maybe. Is it important to Nemaha County? Absolutely. Some money could be channeled into specific activities at Brownville, or we could be part of a multi-county consortium to support lots of tourist attractions in southeast Nebraska.
There is one more category listed that may be the most important from a feed-back standpoint. That category is “Other”. This is the area where you can put down your thoughts on what you think is most important to our town and county. What do we need to make our town more family friendly? What do we baby boomers need to make our town a better place in which to retire? What facilities do we need to make our town more livable? Maybe you think we have housing or shopping or cultural issues that you would like to see addressed. Put anything you want on the survey. It’s your town.
EAGLES FIREWWORKS SHOW
I have been informed by the high-flying Eagles Club that once again they will produce the area’s best 4th of July fireworks show this year. The have a great location, expertise in setting off the displays, and always a large and appreciative crowd.
They only need one thing to make it a reality. MONEY! It cost thousands of dollars to produce a show of this quality. The Eagles men and supporting auxiliary club raise lots of money each year for a variety of worthy causes in our county. To support their usual causes, they cannot underwrite the whole cost of the fireworks show.
They need the support of the whole area to make this project work; And not just from the business community. There is nothing wrong with individual and family donations. Our business community is called upon throughout the year for donations. This is a great opportunity for everybody to help financially.
Donations can be sent to the Eagles Club, 1017 Central Ave, 68305 or drop off your donation during their business hours or to any Eagles member.

Auburn’s WiFi businesses
Auburn has a number of businesses in which a person may use their WiFi connection:
1. All of the motels have WiFi available for at least a portion of the rooms. If a person is interested in utilizing their computer without hooking it up to a line, they can ask the motel manager
2. A number of restaurants in Auburn have WiFi. They are:
a. Amigos
b. Arbor Manor
c. Hickory Road Barbecue
Auburn has WiFi in Legion Memorial Park & at Rotary Lake
Last week, Auburn put WiFi at both Legion Park & Rotary Lake. You may go listen to a Friday noon concert or go enjoy the geese while working on your computer now.
What Is WiFi?
I found the following write up on the internet and it was written by Marshall Brain and Tracy V. Wilson : A wireless network uses radio waves, just like cell phones, televisions and radios do. In fact, communication across a wireless network is a lot like two-way radio communication. Here's what happens:
1. A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna.
2. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. It sends the information to the Internet using a physical, wired Ethernet connection.
The process also works in reverse, with the router receiving information from the Internet, translating it into a radio signal and sending it to the computer's wireless adapter.
