Tour of Historic Buildings in Auburn

If you would like to tour some of the historic homes of Auburn, the following is a suggested tour so you can see some of the homes. Auburn has a number of buildings included in the National Registry of Historic Places - those buildings will be highlighted in dark red.

The state historical society found a number of buildings in Auburn that have historical/architectural significance but not on the National Registry of Historic Places (gleaned from the ‘Historical Resources Survey – Nemaha County’ August 2004). Those buildings will be highlighted teal.

You may want to grab a cup of coffee and a pastry at the ‘Mad Hatters’ at 13 th and Hwy 75.

  • From the Mad Hatter, go east on 13 th St past the Italianate House – 819 13th St, past the Queen Anne Style House – 721 13th St, past the Cooper House – 712 13th St and past the Queen Anne Style House – 703 13th St.
  • Turn South on F St past the Tudor Revival House - 1508 F Stto 16 th St.
  • Turn west to G St
  • Turn north to 15 th St
  • Turn west and go past the Queen Anne Style House – 15th & I to I St
  • Turn south to 16 th St
  • Turn west and go to Hwy 75. You will go past the Dutch Colonial Revival House – 909 16th St and past the Church-Howe house –919 16th St
  • Turn north on Hwy 75 for six blocks. You will go past the east side of Legion Park –Hwy 75 east to H St and 10th to 11th St. The park goes two blocks to the east of the highway.
  • Turn east to H St.
  • Turn south Hwy 136
  • Turn west past the Auburn Opera House – 919, 921, 923 Central Avenue. You will continue west past the Auburn Methodist Church – 1205 L St and the Wilber Reed house – 1204 N St to O St.
  • Turn south on O St for four blocks. You will go past the Dutch Colonial Revival House – 1506 O St.
  • Turn west for one block on 16 th St
  • Turn north for two blocks on P St.
  • Turn east on 14 th St. Go past the Queen Anne Style house – 1310 14th St and the Queen Anne Style House – 1120 14th St and past the Post Office – 1320 Courthouse Ave
  • Turn south on Courthouse Ave.
    • Turn south on K St. Go 4 blocks past the Queen Anne style house – 1021 17th St the Queen Anne Style House – 1710 K St . and the Italianate House – 1720 K St

  • Turn west on 18 th St for two blocks past the Queen Anne House (uninhabited but an interesting house) – 1120 18th St
  • Turn north on M St past the Queen Anne Style house – 1612 M St
  • Turn west on 14 th St to O St
  • Turn south on O St for nine blocks. You will go past the Dutch Colonial Revival style house – 1421 17th St and the Nemaha Valley Museum – 1421 -1423 19th St (www.visitnemahacounty.org)
  • Turn east on 23 rd St one block to N St. You will notice the Auburn Catholic Church – 23rd & N
  • Turn north on N St to Oak Leaf Drive. You will go past the Old Carson National Bank – 1901 N St, the Nemaha County Courthouse – 19th & O St, and the Presbyterian Church – 1322 19th St
  • Turn west on Oak Leaf Drive to O St. Go south to 1904 O St and have a cup of coffee at Serendipity. Congratulate yourself because you have just completed the tour of the historic homes of Auburn.

If you like pre-cut houses, Auburn has some of the first.
